Aging – Crisis or Blessing
Let’s face it, we’re always getting older, day in and day out. We can understand what it means to age and ask ourselves, “Is aging a crisis or a blessing?”.
What is aging?
Aging is defined as
When are we considered old age?
Old age defined in 3 age groups (according to Wikipedia)
One study distinguishes the young old (60 to 69), the middle old (70 to 79), and the very old (80+).
Another study’s sub-grouping is young-old (65 to 74), middle-old (75–84), and oldest-old (85+).
A third sub-grouping is “young old” (65–74), “old” (74–84), and “old–old” (85+).
Are there stages to aging?
Some experts generally break down aging in older adults into five basic stages:
- Independence.
- Interdependence.
- Dependency.
- Crisis management.
- End of life.
Is aging considered a blessing?
At what age do we start aging?
Does aging bring wisdom?
The short answer is yes. Wisdom does come with age and experience.
For example; When I was young I usually only thought about myself and my own desires for my life. Then after I got married and started a family my thoughts became more about the people in my life and taking care of all the necessary things of everyday life.
After age 65 I began to think about what I want for the last chapters of my life. Knowing what I know now, having cared for many elderly people, I chose to be wise and understand what may be coming and what to put in place so that I have peace of mind if I become ill or pass away.

Most of the retirement books I’ve found are primarily about the financial needs for retirement and their focus is on married couples. Very little has been written for single women retiring.
Many are missing some of the more important topics including preparing for older age and the need for an advocate when we can no longer speak or do for ourselves while recovering from a critical event.
The first book I’ll review was published by AARP, THE SINGLE WOMAN’S GUIDE TO RETIREMENT. The author, Jan Cullinane has written a comprehensive guide that includes many subjects and gives examples of challenges we may face retiring alone.
